Arctic Monkeys' third album Humbug is the record where the Sheffield band walked away from the wiry, sprinting indie rock that made them famous and went looking for something darker. Half of it was cut in the California desert with Josh Homme producing, the other half in Brooklyn with longtime collaborator James Ford, and you can hear both places in it: heavy, hazy riffs, reverb that seems to stretch for miles, and Alex Turner writing in a stranger, more poetic register than before. "Crying Lightning" and "Cornerstone" became live staples, but the album rewards a front-to-back listen more than any of their early releases. Released on Domino in 2009, it remains the pivot point in their catalogue, the moment they became a band capable of anything.
