Agnes Obel - The Meaning of Flowers - Vinyl Record
Agnes Obel's first album in six years arrives on Deutsche Grammophon, and it is the most self-contained record she has made. The Danish singer, pianist and producer wrote, arranged, recorded and produced all twelve tracks alone in her Berlin studio, which is why the album holds the hushed, close-miked intimacy that made Philharmonics and Myopia travel so far beyond folk audiences.
The songs circle new beginnings and transformation, written in the period around the birth of her first child, and her reading shows through: the ancient Sumerian poet Enheduanna, the philosophy of Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia, and the Danish pop she grew up hearing in the eighties and nineties all leave traces. Strings, celeste and layered voice do most of the work, with very little standing between the melody and the microphone.
A quietly ambitious return, and one worth hearing on vinyl.
