Roman Candle is where it all started. Elliott Smith recorded these songs on a four-track in a Portland basement in 1993, never really meaning them for release, until his then-girlfriend J.J. Gonson passed the tapes to Cavity Search Records, who issued them in 1994.

It is the most unguarded record he ever made: just Smith, an acoustic guitar and that close, double-tracked voice. Most of the songs did not even get proper titles, and "No Name #1" through "No Name #4" sit next to the title track, "Condor Ave." and the bleak, beautiful "Last Call".

Kill Rock Stars reissued it with a remaster by Roger Seibel at SAE and Larry Crane, Tape Op editor and Smith's archivist, and this pressing comes on 180-gram vinyl. Label founder Slim Moon once said he had never before or since heard music so raw, personal and wise.

Essential for anyone who loves Either/Or, and the clearest view of the songwriter Smith was about to become.

Shipping
Orders typically ship within two business days. Media Mail might be budget-friendly, but it travels at a glacial pace and gets little love from the postal service. For faster, smoother delivery, choose USPS Priority or UPS/USPS Ground.

Returns
Unopened returns accepted within 30 days — you cover shipping.

If your record arrives damaged or folded (thanks, postal service), reach out ASAP so we can fix it.

After 30 days, it’s yours to keep forever.

Avoid extreme heat or sunlight. Definitely don’t let it mingle with any Justin Bieber records. Treat it like your grandma — gentle, respectful, and quiet during Murder, She Wrote.
