Letting Off the Happiness is the second Bright Eyes album, first released on Saddle Creek in 1998 when Conor Oberst was just 18. It was recorded between Oberst's basement in Omaha and Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia, and it was the first Bright Eyes record produced by Mike Mogis, who would become a permanent member of the band. Guests from Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, Cursive and Tilly and the Wall add warmth around Oberst's trembling voice.

The songs are raw, lo-fi and startlingly direct. "Padraic My Prince" and "June on the West Coast" remain among his most devastating early songs, while "The City Has Sex" and "Pull My Hair" show the restless energy that would drive the band's later work. This edition comes from Dead Oceans' reissue series of the Bright Eyes catalog and closes with "Contrast and Compare (Version)," the hidden track from the original release.

An essential chapter in the late-90s indie folk and emo story, and a must for any Bright Eyes shelf.

Shipping
Orders typically ship within two business days. Media Mail might be budget-friendly, but it travels at a glacial pace and gets little love from the postal service. For faster, smoother delivery, choose USPS Priority or UPS/USPS Ground.

Returns
Unopened returns accepted within 30 days — you cover shipping.

If your record arrives damaged or folded (thanks, postal service), reach out ASAP so we can fix it.

After 30 days, it’s yours to keep forever.

Avoid extreme heat or sunlight. Definitely don’t let it mingle with any Justin Bieber records. Treat it like your grandma — gentle, respectful, and quiet during Murder, She Wrote.
