Earthling, from 2022, is Eddie Vedder's first proper solo rock album. His earlier solo records leaned acoustic or served as film soundtracks, but this one plugs in, with producer Andrew Watt, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and drummer Chad Smith forming the core band.
"Long Way" has a warm, Tom Petty-style drive, "Brother the Cloud" is a searching tribute to his late brother, and "The Haves" is one of the tenderest ballads he has recorded. The guest list is remarkable: Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on "Try," Elton John sings and plays piano on "Picture," and Ringo Starr drums on "Mrs. Mills."
It is the sound of a veteran enjoying himself, a record that nods to the rock heroes he grew up on without sounding like anyone but Vedder. A strong addition for any Pearl Jam fan.
