Punch the Clock, from 1983, is the record where Elvis Costello and the Attractions went for a big, bright pop sound and landed some of the best songs of his career. Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley produced, fresh from their work with Madness, and brought in the TKO Horns and backing vocalists Afrodiziak to fill out the arrangements.
"Everyday I Write the Book" became his first US top 40 hit, and "Let Them All Talk" opens with brass at full blast. The emotional core is "Shipbuilding," written with Langer about the Falklands War, featuring a Chet Baker trumpet solo that remains one of the most affecting moments in his catalogue. "Pills and Soap" and "TKO (Boxing Day)" show he had not lost his edge.
This UMe reissue is pressed on 180-gram vinyl, remastered from the original master tapes. An essential piece of any Costello collection.
