Blood Orange - Freetown Sound Vinyl Record

Freetown Sound is the third Blood Orange album from Dev Hynes, released by Domino in 2016 and named after Freetown, Sierra Leone, his father's birthplace. It plays like a scrapbook of a life lived between cultures: lush R&B, rubbery funk and late-night pop stitched together with spoken word, field recordings and found sound, all circling questions of race, faith, identity and belonging.

Hynes wrote, played and produced most of it himself, and the guests fold right into his world. Debbie Harry turns up on "E.V.P.", Nelly Furtado lends her voice to the shimmering "Hadron Collider", and Empress Of joins him on "Best To You." Lead single "Augustine" sits among some of the most intimate and political songwriting of his career, and the 17 songs flow together like one continuous statement.

Spread across two LPs, Freetown Sound rewards a front-to-back listen with the lights low. A modern R&B landmark that deserves a place on the shelf.
