Rising to power gradually, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings established themselves as one of the most reliable bands in the classic soul revivalism genre. They released a series of albums and toured for years, making the process of creating increasingly exciting albums seem effortless. In their fifth album titled Give the People What They Want, the band is at the top of their game, producing a collection of classic Northern soul, deep funk grooves, and heartrending ballads. The track "Now I See" and the album opener "Retreat!" have a creeping shuffle reminiscent of the more cracked Supremes hits, while "Long Time, Wrong Time" leans on swampy Southern soul influence. Jones' voice is the highlight of the album—she maintains complete control, never sacrificing her character or nuance to sound like any of her '60s reference points. Although the album is relatively short, running just over half an hour, it is a masterpiece of soul perfection that would have been celebrated if it had been released in 1966. Jones and her band touch on everything from early-'60s horn-heavy dance-craze soul sounds to the slightly psychedelic flutter of the sublime lazy Sunday ballad "Making Up and Breaking Up (And Making Up and Breaking Up Over Again)." These ten songs are designed to be played on repeat, and they deliver the colorful and ecstatically fun sound that audiences have come to expect from one of the best acts in the retrofitted classic soul genre.
