"Arular" is the debut studio album by British artist M.I.A. The album's title is taken from the political code name used by M.I.A.'s father, and the themes of conflict and revolution are prominent in the lyrics and artwork. The album features a diverse range of musical styles, including hip-hop, electroclash, funk carioca and punk rock. M.I.A. created the basic tracks using a Roland MC-505 sequencer/drum machine gifted to her by her friend Justine Frischmann from Elastica.
