The Mountain Goats, led by John Darnielle, built a cult following in the '90s with lo-fi releases before signing with 4AD in 2002, marking a shift to studio work. Between 2002 and 2009, six albums came out, and now on their 22nd, the band remains active. Darnielle's extensive catalog of over 800 songs includes few personal ones; most are about his childhood home and its people, especially in 'The Sunset Tree,' written after his stepfather's death in 2003. He describes the album as a redemptive story about overcoming trauma, despite his initial reluctance to address such personal themes.
