Fridmann produced the duo's latter album, which shows they aimed for unconventionality over commercial success. Their label wanted another hit like "Kids". Fridmann was paired with Patrick Wimberly, who creates radio-friendly alternative pop. The result was "Little Dark Age", a polished album with catchy melodies, but also quirky sound effects and psychedelic vocals. When balanced, the album shines, such as "When You Die" and "One Thing Left to Try", which have a macabre indie pop sound and a stadium-sized new wave sound, respectively.
