Musician Katie Crutchfield has created a captivating EP with her ever-evolving musical project Waxahatchee, entitled Great Thunder. This compilation contains a variety of songs composed with experimental recording group Great Thunder while she crafted her albums Cerulean Salt and Ivy Tripp. Initially forgotten, Crutchfield and producer Brad Cook opted to recast them at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio. This endeavor was restorative for Crutchfield, who sought to move away from her previous rock-based sounds to her country and folk roots. She calls Great Thunder “a complete 180” from her earlier record, as it is extremely minimalist and features her alone. Audiences may recognize certain tracks, like “Chapel of Pines” and “Singer’s No Star.” The finale, “Takes So Much,” was reconstructed on piano, bursting forth with gorgeousness that even shocked Crutchfield.
