Magnetic Fields, The - Love at the Bottom of the Sea - Vinyl Record
Love at the Bottom of the Sea marks the Magnetic Fields' return to synthesizers after a trilogy of acoustic albums, and Stephin Merritt sounds like he never left. Fifteen songs, none longer than three minutes, each one a perfectly constructed pop miniature packed with wit, hooks, and heartbreak.
"Andrew in Drag" is the standout and one of the best songs Merritt has ever written, a bittersweet two-minute gem about seeing someone in a completely new light. "God Wants Us to Wait" opens the album with deadpan synth-pop, "Your Girlfriend's Face" is pure new wave charm courtesy of Shirley Simms, and "Quick!" is a frantic, infectious rush. The humor runs deep throughout, from the absurd "I've Run Away to Join the Fairies" to the suburban satire of "My Husband's Pied-a-Terre" (sung by Claudia Gonson). Every track earns its place.
Released in 2012 on Merge Records, this is the Magnetic Fields at their most concise and fun. If you've been meaning to explore beyond 69 Love Songs, start here.

Unopened returns accepted within 30 days — you cover shipping.
If your record arrives damaged or folded (thanks, postal service), reach out ASAP so we can fix it.
After 30 days, it’s yours to keep forever.
Avoid extreme heat or sunlight. Definitely don’t let it mingle with any Justin Bieber records. Treat it like your grandma — gentle, respectful, and quiet during Murder, She Wrote.
