The album's cover art beautifully captures a blue-tinted X-ray of a pelvis adorned with a belt buckle, zipper, and an intrauterine device (IUD), all of which symbolize themes of transparency and femininity. Lorde describes the album as "100% written in blood," with the intention of reflecting her femininity in its raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, spiritual, and masculine aspects. She truly emphasizes full transparency in both language and sound, with a heartfelt desire to see herself all the way through. 'Virgin' also features exciting collaborations with talented producers and artists such as Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange). The album was expertly mixed by Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst and beautifully mastered by Chris Gehringer.
