Song of the Lark and Other Far Memories brings together Angel Olsen's two most ambitious records and frames them as what they always were: two sides of the same story. The 4LP box set pairs the lush, orchestral sweep of All Mirrors (2019) with its stripped-down counterpart Whole New Mess (2020), plus a bonus LP of alternate takes, remixes, and covers titled Far Memory.
Hearing these albums side by side is revelatory. All Mirrors is dramatic, cinematic, and full of strings, horns, and layered production courtesy of Jherek Bischoff and Ben Babbitt. Whole New Mess strips those same songs back to their bones, recorded solo in a converted church. Tracks like "Lark" and "Lark Song," or "Tonight" and "Tonight (Without You)," show just how much range these compositions hold. The Far Memory LP fills in the gaps with previously unreleased full-band versions of "Whole New Mess" and "Waving, Smiling," a cover of Roxy Music's "More Than This," and remixes by Johnny Jewel and Mark Ronson.
Released in 2021 on Jagjaguwar, this box set includes a 40-page photo and lyric book. A complete document of one of the most rewarding creative chapters in recent indie music.
