Volcano Choir is the collaborative project of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and members of Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Repave is the record where it all clicks into place. Released in 2013 on Jagjaguwar, this second album trades the glitchy experimentation of their debut for something bolder and more immediate: a fully realized rock record built on towering vocals, layered guitars, and anthemic songwriting.
Standout single "Byegone" rides a driving groove into one of the most infectious hooks in Vernon's catalog, while "Comrade" and "Alaskans" showcase the band's gift for building tension and releasing it at exactly the right moment. Closer "Almanac" stretches out over six and a half minutes, a patient, rewarding send-off. Eight tracks, no filler, and a sound that belongs to no one else.
