Jason Molina traveled to Glasgow, Scotland to record The Lioness, and the change of scenery pulled something extraordinary out of him. Backed by members of Arab Strap (Aidan Moffat, David Gow) along with Alasdair Roberts and others, this is Songs: Ohia's most atmospheric and emotionally devastating album.
"The Black Crow" opens with over seven minutes of slow, patient intensity that sets the tone for everything that follows. "Tigress" brings a darker, fuller sound, while "Nervous Bride" strips things back to raw nerve. "Being in Love" is Molina at his most vulnerable, turning what sounds like a love song into something far more complicated. The title track is a six-minute centerpiece of aching beauty, and "Coxcomb Red" delivers one of his most quietly powerful performances. "Just a Spark" closes the album in barely two minutes, leaving you wanting more.
Released in 2000 on Secretly Canadian, The Lioness is often cited as the essential Songs: Ohia record. It belongs in every serious collection.
