Foxygen traded the lo-fi chaos for a full orchestra on Hang, and the result is their most polished and theatrical record. Sam France and Jonathan Rado recruited the Star Power Orchestra to bring these eight tracks to life, delivering a lush, cinematic album that channels '70s variety-show grandeur with a knowing wink.
"Follow the Leader" opens with sweeping strings and horns before France's vocals strut in with pure showman energy. "Avalon" is breezy West Coast pop perfection, while "America" stretches into a five-minute epic that feels genuinely anthemic. The album's tighter runtime (just over 30 minutes) works in its favor, keeping every track focused and purposeful. "Rise Up" closes things out with the kind of orchestral swell that begs you to start the record over.
Released in 2017 on Jagjaguwar, Hang is Foxygen proving they can do big and beautiful just as well as wild and unpredictable. A gem worth spinning.
