Alvvays is a band of two women and three men, armed with the sounds of C-86 tapes and a love of jangle-jangle. Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan, childhood neighbors from Cape Breton, began weaving folksongs and fiddle tunes together; then heartache seeped in, along with the music of Teenage Fanclub and Belle and Sebastian. Prince Edward Island natives Alec O’Hanley, Brian Murphy and Philip MacIsaac shared a similar love of melodic melancholy, and the gang convened in Toronto to create their debut LP. Transgression Records’ Alvvays spans sun-splashed and twilit tones, hiding heartache and death in tungsten-tinged pop that glitters like sea glass.
