She sang with the bands of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine before launching her solo career in the late 40s, but didn't really cross the consciousness of the wider public until she signed with Mercury Records in 1954, which resulted in a series of noteworthy albums. Vaughan was an accomplished song stylist who was as comfortable scatting over a swinging groove as she was delivering a sensuous romantic ballad.
