Initially a postpunk band with gothic influences, The Cure transformed into one of the most innovative, artistically rewarding, and impactful groups of the 1980s. Their signature sound ranges from ethereal pop to introspective expressionism, characterized by an adventurous, hypnotic quality and rich textures. Formed in 1976 by Robert Smith along with schoolmates Michael Dempsey (bass) and Laurence Tolhurst (drums), The Cure's remarkable debut in 1979 on the U.K.-based Fiction Records set the stage for an extraordinary career and long-lasting global appeal.
Released in 1980, their second album, Seventeen Seconds, showcased the darker, emotionally charged sound that would become synonymous with the band, largely owing to the progression of Robert Smith's songwriting and a shift in the lineup that introduced Simon Gallup as bassist, while keyboardist Mathieu Hartley joined the group. Seventeen Seconds signified the beginning of the Cure's "Dark Trilogy," which also featured the subsequent albums Faith and Pornography.
