Liz Phair's second album, Whip-Smart, was released in 1994, following her critically acclaimed debut album, Exile In Guyville, which was released in 1993. The album debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart and later achieved gold status. It was ranked sixth in The Village Voice Pazz and Jop Poll for that year. Although it was overshadowed by its famous predecessor, Whip-Smart has gained more recognition over time and is widely regarded as a vital album in Phair's artistic legacy, along with her other two Matador Records releases and the Girly Sound tapes. In 2014, Rolling Stone named Whip-Smart the 18th greatest album of the year, marking it as the peak of mainstream alternative rock.
