Originally released in 1990, the band's third album in as many years reunited them with producer Gil Norton after the platinum-selling Doolittle, at a time when Kim Deal was also riding high with The Breeders' debut Pod.

Bossanova shows a less primal side of Pixies, with surf guitar and space rock pushed to the front. It opens with "Cecilia Ann," a Surftones cover and the first cover on any Pixies album, and carries the singles "Velouria," "Dig for Fire" and "Allison," a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison. Black Francis sharpens his cryptic sci-fi obsessions throughout, a theme that inspired Vaughan Oliver's classic planet sleeve design.

A long-overdue upgrade for one of alternative rock's most influential bands.
