Recorded with Doug Easley at his studio in Memphis, it pairs her soft, haunting voice and spare guitar with Easley's pedal steel and the sympathetic drumming of Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley.

Marshall sounds more self-assured here than on her earlier records, investing real fire in songs like the brooding Water and Air and the feedback-laced title track. She also makes two covers her own: Peter Jefferies' Fate of the Human Carbine and Smog's Bathysphere.

A defining record of nineties lo-fi and slowcore, and an essential starting point for anyone exploring Cat Power's catalogue.
