First released in 1988, it was their last album of the decade and the moment the underground's most notorious outcasts started drawing rave reviews from outlets that had never paid them any attention.

The range is wild even by Buttholes standards. "Jimi" opens in a blood-smeared haze of guitar overload, "I Saw an X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas" turns into an acoustic sing-along of strange sweetness, and "John E. Smoke" rants in the spirit of the Fugs. Psychedelia, noise rock and twisted country all collide on a record that set up their move toward wider success in the '90s.

A cornerstone of American noise rock and a must for anyone collecting the Matador reissues.
